Its population is estimated to be around 35,000. Sharm el-Sheikh is the administrative hub of Egypt’s South Sinai Governorate which includes the smaller coastal towns of Dahab and Nuweiba and the mountainous interior, Saint Catherine’s Monastery and Mount Sinai.
Sharm El-Sheikh is the base for diving The Straits of Tiran and Ras Mohammed, probably the most well-known diving area of the Red Sea. There are over 40 diving sites suitable for all level divers. The area consists of downtown Sharm el-Maya, busy Na’ama Bay and Sharks’ Bay further up the coast.
