Formerly known as Stann Creek Town, Dangriga is the largest town in southern Belize. It might not be on your shorlist yet, but if you take a closer look you start to realize that this could actually be the most strategically placed location for diving. Dangriga lies between the northern Cayes and the pristine south, and is relatively close to both the famous Turneffe Islands and Lighthouse Reef -with its Great Blue Hole-, but also to the south where you can find the World Heritage site Glover's Reef Atoll. On top of that, Gladden Spit, the famous location for diving with Whalesharks is also within reach of Dangriga.

Because the reefs and Cayes on the (south) east of Dangriga are less visited by those whom are based at the northern islands (Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker), these reefs are the least visited of all the atolls. The closest dive spots to Dangriga are at the Southern Barrier Reef, which are half a day trips. Tobacco Caye and South Water Caye are popular where you can dive the Grand Channel. From April to June around full moon you can go diving with whale sharks at the world famous Gladden Spit, located near Placencia. Another popular resort area for diving in the Dangriga region is Hopkins, where you will find various facilities to cater to your diving needs.
