Airlie Beach & Whitsunday Islands

In between Cairns and Bundaberg is Airlie Beach, once a backpacker’s paradise, today a fast-growing holiday destination and the main gateway to one of the most spectacular island groups in Australia: The Whitsunday islands. One of the most popular activities here is sailing, but the fringing reefs offer great diving opportunities and further offshore (90 km) is the central region of the Great Barrier Reef. This area is also home to one of the best wreck dives in the world and certainly the best wreck dive in Australia: the SS Yongola.

The islands are perfect for a paradise-like holiday with white sandy beaches, tropical forests and plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities and watersports. The Whitsunday islands are filled with beautiful fringing reefs and coral gardens, with a huge variety of marine life. Within 2-3 hours you’ll be in the central area of the Great Barrier Reef. A few hours north towards Townsville, you will find one of Australia’s (and the world’s) greatest shipwrecks: the SS Yongala.
